June 25 2009: Dragonfly Technologies Information Security Strategy Consultant Christian Boersch submits response to recently released Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) draft guidelines for IT security to improve security within financial institutions.

As security professionals, we welcome this initiative from APRA and call for public comment on the draft Prudential Practice Guide (PPG 234) – Management of IT security risk.

Understandably, many institutions are in need of such guidance by APRA, there is no doubt that the guide is a very good starting point for Australian regulated organisations to check whether they are indeed appropriately considering these issues and hopefully, wherever relevant to the individual institution, other IT security measures. The form in which it is delivered - as a guide to good/sound practice in the field of IT security management rather than as a prescriptive and binding instrument - is also to be commended.

IT security is inherently difficult to get right and needs almost always to be balanced with costs, useability and similar concerns. It is the sincere hope that the attached comments may be helpful and that they may be considered in APRA’s finalisation of this excellent guide.
