The Modern Perimeter
As organisations continue to migrate their infrastructure environments towards cloud and software as a service model, the traditional perimeter security and DMZ models no longer maintain relevance. Traditional DMZs have no visibility and control of services sitting outside their physical perimeter. As a result, we need to flip perimeter security on its head and move away from protecting a physical location or boundary.
The modern perimeter does precisely this (often referred to an as identity perimeter) taking the approach of user identity and access management as a different mechanism to maintain control without compromising the native user experience. Using this approach to a modern perimeter we can then look to identify the user along with the ability to validate role, device, location and privileges and make appropriate decisions to control and secure access.
